Fitness starts at home. You are what you eat, just as what you sow is what you reap.

In this post I would like to focus on how I maintained the good health of me and my family. To start with, I would like to mention that since I was a kid, say 3 or 4 years of age, I had seen my grandfather (maternal) doing yoga exercises. I used to imitate him and developed an interest in yoga. Later on, in my school we had yoga classes twice a week. I used to do all yoga poses comfortably and used to be praised for it by my teachers.

I married a mechanical engineer who was working for a cement plant in remote area. I left my job and became a homemaker. My husband was very busy with his plant just like doctors are busy with their patients. His job needed a lot of activity so he didn’t need separate workout. But I used to do yoga. When I became a mother I had to steal time for my yoga. When my children started going to school, I had to wake up early for my fitness program. I used to do brisk walking in the morning for one hour then I used to wake up my husband then children.

I have always encouraged my children to play outdoor games which is very important for maintaining good mental and physical health which in turn help them in concentrating on studies. We used to play family cricket and badminton with kids whenever my husband gets time out of his busy schedule.

Today my children are 25 and 23 years old me and my husband are fit and fine. Now my husband is in corporate world so he is also working out (walking and yoga) thrice a week. We usually do 8kms of brisk walking. Our medical parameters are perfect.

Now I’ll discuss how a working woman can maintain good health of herself and her family.

Getting up a few minutes earlier in the morning can provide you with some quiet time to exercise before the kids wake up. Start walking your kids to school or to the bus stop. While watching your favourite programme on TV you can do yoga poses. While talking over phone you can walk and talk. You can join some gym near your work; go outside and play with your children. Gardening can be a light refreshing workout too.

At the end I would like to say that everyone has only 24 hours in a day. What matters is how we utilize them.

In the next post I will focus on how yoga and walking helped me in fighting thyroid and blood pressure.
